Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

Under the direction of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Quality Improvement Organizations (QIOs) are now partnering with providers in ten states and one territory to slow the progression of CKD to kidney failure and to improve clinical care for kidney patients. The states are Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New York, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah. The territory is the U. S. Virgin Islands.

Quality improvement for CKD patients includes:

  • Annual testing to detect the rate of kidney failure due to diabetes
  • Slowing the progression of disease in hypertensive individuals with diabetes through the use of Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and/or Angiotensin Receptor Blocker (ARB) agents
  • Arteriovenous fistula (AV Fistula) placement and maturation (as a first choice for arteriovenous access where medically appropriate) for individuals who elect hemodialysis as their treatment option for kidney failure

Listed below are some of the activities that the QIOs' CKD Partners are engaged in. The Pilot QIOs would be grateful if you could assist with any or all of the following:

  • Provide an endorsement letter to promote the project
  • Use existing communication vehicles including e-mails, newsletters, journals, websites, etc. to promote the project by running QIO Support Center (QIOSC) identified articles
  • Share educational tools and opportunities
  • Inform the QIOSC of any events that may offer cross-promotional activities
  • Promote the project at conferences, allow the project to exhibit at events, etc.

For more specific information along with tools and resources, please visit MedQIC or contact Robin Weil, MSHA, RN, CPHQ, Prevention QIOSC Director at rweil@vaqio.sdps.org
